Workshop: Simple AF Portaiture SECOND DATE!
Invisible Threads presents a workshop in Simple Portraiture!
Duration: 2 hours
Instructor: Rachel Lee-Carman
Location: Cafe Des Chutes, 50 SE Scott St #22, Bend, OR
Day and Time: Saturday, March 16th, 4p - 6p
Please join me, free-lance illustrator Rachel Lee-Carman, as we dive into the deceptively tricky practice of making simple self-portraits.
What to expect
In this class we will be working small, just on faces, and within 2-inch sizes.
This is to practice something more akin to graphic-novel work than highly-detailed hang-above-the-mantle work. Our drawings should be leaping off the page saying things to us, and we’ll give them the space for that.
Synopsis of Workshop
We will start our class drawing faces unfamiliar to us, noticing details and examining the anatomy of the practice, converting nebulous shapes on a face to stark ink lines.
We will learn how simple tricks can make a face go from strange to recognizable.
We will break the features of the face down: chin, eyes, brows, nose, hair, mouth, ears, and accessories.
Every feature can be carefully and thoughtfully converted into simple lines, it just takes practice!
We will learn how abbreviated shapes can act as symbolic references, magically capturing the essence of a person.
We will take our time and we will draw and sketch and ink for two hours!
Products and Mediums
You’ll also get the chance to practice using a workshop-provided brush-pen and working on illustration-intended Strathmore drawing pages. Interacting with mediums within the warm facilitation of a workshop has always helped me move my process forward. It’s almost as if I’ve needed permission to wield such supplies. In this class you will let the ink flow! Just draw!
What you will receive and take home!
- a Pigma FB Sakura brand brush pen (the most commercially available and quality brush-pen found in the High Desert)
- small journal for drawing and note-taking
- pencils (sharp!)
- loose-leaf Strathmore drawing pages and index-stock for more drawing
In the end, we will produce a final work we are satisfied with.
I work small to avoid being intimidated, so our finally drawing will fit on a page smaller than a polaroid.
I will provide tech in which to covert your illustration digitally. Having work you can share on social is rewarding!
Gallery Walk of High-Fives
After, let’s curate a small gallery with the faces that we draw! I'll provide little frames and we can cut out out best-ofs. There's something about seeing the culmination of a sessions work in perspective. The myriad-of-the-many blunders the critic in my experience. And getting perspective on the skill-sets we've acquired is rewarding!
Students will also be optioned to have their face converted into a one-inch face stamp through Bend Stamp Co, at-cost for $15! Making face-stamps is one of my favorite practices as an illustrator.
Facilitating this experience opens the gateway for you to make face-stamps as gifts for all your friends and family!
Open to all skill-levels and family-friendly for teens!
Space is limited, reserve your spot to spill some ink with us in February!
