Join me in an informal and fun workshop learning a primary skill utilizing the basics of technology: plants and our hands!

From the every-once-in-awhile skill-share host Rachel Lee-Carman comes Nettle Cordage Workshop!

Spend a few hours learning cordage basics with NETTLE, an abundant fiber material growing in Central Oregon.

Cordage, which can also be called rope or twine, is an early human technology wielded to bind, craft nets, create leverage, and is a primary skill for basket weaving.

Harnessing this ability grants you the opportunity to connect and work with the natural world.

Leave this workshop with six-feet of spooled cordage and the ability and confidence to harvest, process, and cord on your own!

I've been hand-making nettle cordage since 2019. I've taught workshops, been invited to share at events, and brought this skill to Cascade Academy in 2023.

This workshop will take you through the steps of the cordage process: proper retting (making the material pliable), separating the chaff from the bark, and using twisting and tension to create strong, functional cordage.

Locating, harvesting, and processing of raw plant material will be explored!

Plant material we use will be prepared in advance to expedite the hands-on experience.

All materials are included with this workshop.

No prior experience necessary. Please bring your patience as learning a new skill is always a challenge! I'll be with you every step of the way to keep it informative and fun.

Nettle is also enjoyed as tea or broth, and the leaves make an excellent pesto.

Nettle tea from my garden and dietary-mindful snackies will be offered during this workshop!

(The nettle we will be using for this project has gone to seed. Nettle with catkins and not suitable for human consumption due to high levels of calcium carbonate crystals)

Space limited! Sign up as soon as possible to reserve your spot!

You'll receive a reminder email the week before the workshop.

Cancellations are available up to 48-hours before the workshop. If something comes up, just reach out - I'm sure we can figure something out!
